2019

Renette Aw ZiYi

West Symphonia In Action IV - 18th May 2019

Ms Renette Aw ZiYi first began learning to play the Alto Horn in 2007 when she was just 7 years old at Xingnan Primary School. During her 6 years in the Primary School Brass Band, Renette participated in 2 Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation (SYF AP) in 2008 and 2010. After graduating from Secondary School, Renette went to Juying Secondary School and went under the Baton of Mr Jasen How learning the French Horn. During her 5 years in Juying Secondary School Band, She represented her school at the SYP AP in 2013 and 2015 and was awarded the Certificate of Accomplishment on both occasions. She was also recognised for her strong sense of leadership and organisation skills and was made the band's Librarian and French Horn Sectional Leader.

 

After graduating from her secondary school, Renette continued pursuing her higher education at the ITE College West studying Higher Nitec in Mechatronics. Despite her heavy commitment in school and department projects, she chose to face off adversity and took on the role of the band president in 2018. Renette was also instrumental in leading the West Symphonia on their first overseas trip to Hong Kong in 2017. 

Her strong sense of self-discipline, self-management and leadership saw her being awarded the Lee Kuan Yew (LKY) Technology Award, Lee Kuan Yew Model Student Award, ITE Arts Excellence Award as well as the ITE CCA Medal Award. She is the only recipient of 2 LKY Awards in 2019. 

2018

Nurul Amirah Bte Maszrudean

Nurul Amirah bte Maszrudean’s love for music began when she was in Ahmad Ibrahim Primary School. She joined the Angklung ensemble and represented her school at the 2010 Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Central Judging and clinched the Silver medal. In 2012, when she was posted to Naval Base Secondary School, she continued her passion in music and joined the Symphonic Band, who is under the baton of Mr Joel Goh. From there, she learnt the flute. Amirah participated in the SYF Central Judging in 2013 and clinched a Silver medal. She also participated in the SYF Arts Presentation in 2015 and was awarded the Certificate of Distinction.

 

In 2016, Amirah pursued her tertiary education at the ITE College Central and joined the West Symphonia. She participated in the 2016 National Band Competition and was awarded the Silver medal. She was also awarded a Distinction by the Trinity College of Music for her performance at the National Band Competition.

 

Amirah will continue pursuing her passion in music and sharing the colours of music with her family and friends. She also strongly believes in a holistic music education that is taught in the band curriculum.

Roi Teo Jun Hao

West Symphonia In Action III - 12th May 2018

Roi Teo Jun Hao first started learning the Piano at age 9 in 2008 when he was in primary 3 at Yamaha Music School and achieved the Associated Board of Royal School of Music (ABRSM) grade 6 in 2014 under the guidance of Ms Junie Yeo. He picked up the flute only in 2012 when he joined the Naval Base Secondary School Band. In 2014 he went under the tutelage of a flute tutor, Mr David Tao to further improve his own flute techniques.

While with the band in Secondary School, he participated in two band competitions; the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Central Judging for bands in 2013 in which the band clinched a silver award and subsequently a Certificate of Distinction at the 2015 SYF Arts Presentation.

After graduating from Naval Base Secondary School, Roi joined the West Symphonia with some of his fellow secondary school band mates as a regular player in order to pursue his passion for band music.

Muhammad Zulkynaen

West Symphonia In Action III - 12th May 2018

Muhammad Zulkynaen began his musical journey as a tubist at Chung Cheng High School (Yishun) in 2019 under the baton of Mr Toh Yang Yang. Zulkynaen was tutored by Mr Teng Siang Hong, who guided him through the early stages of tuba playing. Zulkynaen, together with the band, participated in three competitions in which they clinched a Silver award at the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) central Judging for Bands in 2011, a Gold award at the Hong Kong Winter Festival 2011 and lastly, a Certificate of Distinction at the 2013 SYF Arts Presentation. 

Upon graduating from his secondary school, he went on to pursue further education at ITE College Central and joined the West Symphonia in 2015. In 2016, Zulkynaen and the band participated in the 1st Division of the National Band Competition and was awarded the Silver medal. He was also awarded a Distinction by the Trinity College of Music for his performance at the competition.

2017

Melvin Ang

Melvin Ang played the cornet when he joined Poi Ching Primary School in 2008. He represented his school in the 2009 Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Central Judging for band after just one year of learning the instrument and again in 2011. The school was awarded silver for their performances at both competition. Upon graduating, Melvin continued playing the trumpet at Springfield Secondary School under the Baton of Mrs Chee. He represented his school again at the 2012 and 2014 Singapore Youth Festival and the school was awarded a silver and a Certificate of Accomplishment respectively. Melvin's strong sense of discipline saw him promoted to the band's quartermaster. To improve his playing, he went under the instructorship of Trumpet specialist, Mr Tan Han Yong.

After his secondary school education, Melvin went on to pursue his interest in Tourism at the ITE College West and joined the West Symphonia under the Baton of Mr Joel Goh. Melvin represented West Symphonia at the 1st Division of the National Band Competition and was awarded the silver medal and a Distinction by the Trinity College of Music.

Melvin is the recipient of the 2017 Lee Kuan Yew CCA Award, 2017 Lee Kuan Yew STEP Scholarship, 2017 ITE Top Student award, 2017 Outstanding Award, 2017 ITE College West Faculty Gold Course Medal and 2017 ITE Arts Excellence Award.

Brenda Mok

Brenda Mok started learning the flute in Primary 2 at Lakeside Primary School under the baton of Mr Andrew Kwek. She represented her school at 2 Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Central Judging for bands in 2010 and 2012, which she clinched 2 Silver medals.

Brenda continued to pursue her passion in music by joining the band in Fuhua Secondary School under the baton of Ms Samantha Chong. During her time at her secondary school, she also participated in 2 SYFs in 2013 and 2015, which the school clinched a Gold and the Certificate of Distinction. Brenda also went to Hong Kong and participated in the Winter Band Festival and the school was awarded a Silver. Brenda went on to join the West Symphonia and pursued her education for Nitec in Electrical Lighting and Sound at the ITE College West.

Brenda is the recipient of the 2017 Lee Kuan Yew CCA Award, 2017 Lee Kuan Yew STEP Scholarship, 2017 ITE Top Student award, 2017 Outstanding Award, 2017 Sennheiser Award and 2017 ITE Arts Excellence Award.

Muhammad Sufi

West Symphonia in Action II - 28th May 2017

Muhammad Sufi first joined the band at Regent Secondary School in Secondary 1 under the Baton of Mr Lim Yean Hwee playing the Tuba. During his Secondary school years, Sufi participated in 2 Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation, achieving a Gold & the Certificate of Distinction. Sufi also participated in Singapore International Band Festival and achieved a Silver. 

After graduating, he went on to pursue his studies at the ITE College West where he joined the West Symphonia (Formerly known as Yamato Wind Symphony). He has been involved in several performances, concerts & participated in 2 National Band Competitions, achieving a Gold in the 2nd Division & a Silver in the 1st Division. Sufi has also recently been awarded a Distinction for the LCM level 2 Ensemble performance in July 2016. Sufi was previously studying his Higher Nitec in Civil & Structural Engineering Design at the ITE College Central.

2016

Jamal Bin Jasni

Jamal Bin Jasni started pursuing music when he joined the school band in Bedok South Secondary School. He started playing the trumpet but switched to percussion in 2008 and has continued till this day. Due to his leadership quality, he was chosen to be the drum major and a section leader for 2 years. After graduating from his secondary school, he went on to enroll in ITE College East and joined the ITE Concert Band, whose conductor was Mr Erik Watson.

Jamal also played in an alternative rock band regularly. Throughout his years in ITE, he participated in various band competitions and won the Gold award during the Band Festival. The alternative rock band also won firs place in 'ITE Battles of the Band'.

During his National Service, he served in the Singapore Police Force Band and had performed at National events such as the National Day parade in 2014 and 2015 as well as the SEA Games opening ceremony. He also represented Singapore in the "World's Police Band Concert", which was held in Vietnam. Jamal is currently taking a Diploma in Music at Lasalle, College of the Arts.

Muhammad Raimi

Yamato in Action I - 28th May 2016

Muhammad Raimi began his journey in 2007 playing the cornet at Lakeside Primary School Concert Band under the baton of Andrew Kuek Ser Hong. He later on graduated and entered Yuhua Secondary School. Raimi also joined the Yuhua Concert Band under the baton of Ms Chan Peck Suan and later clinched a Gold Medal in 2011 and a Certificate of Distinction in 2013. Raimi joined Sparkswinds (alumni band of Yuhua Secondary School, River Valley High School and Pioneer Junior College) and was featured as a trumpet soloist with Sparkswinds in one of Esplanade's many Beautiful Sunday concert series.

Raimi relentless pursue for music exposure and education didn't cease after graduating from his Secondary school. While pursuing an education in Mechanical Engineering at the Institute of Education (College West), Raimi joined the ITE West Symphonia (formerly known as Yamato Wind Symphony) and was promoted to the band's Concert Master/Student Conductor at the end of 2015. Raimi continues to pursue his interest by keeping himself active in Singapore's band scene.

Raimi is currently pursuing a Diploma in Music Performance (Trumpet) at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA). He is currently studying under Sergey Tyuteykin, section trumpet of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, for his principal study. Raimi also plays in the NAFA Wind Orchestra under the baton of Joost Flach, Head of Winds, NAFA Orchestra under the baton of Lim Yau, Dean of Music, and the NAFA Brass Ensemble under the tutelage of Tan Yao Cong.

Beyond the campus of NAFA, Raimi is also involved in many external groups.  He has played with The Young Musician's Foundation Orchestra (TYMFO), The Philharmonic Orchestra (Singapore), Lion City Brass Band, and Singapore Wind Symphony. Raimi has taken lessons and masterclasses with many trumpet teachers such as Jason Evans, Andrew Dunn, Mark Upton, Benny Goh and Kenneth Lun.
